Earth: For the Earth Keepers: is part two in a series inspired by creation stories from across the African diaspora. It tells the story of elements Earth, Water, Air, and Fire and how they collaborated on a design for this planet. Each element has different tattoos, and the tattoos on this piece represent bio-integrated technology that support Earth Keepers in our work to cultivate crops, like sunglasses that let us see soil contaminants, headwear that allows us to speak to trees, and chlorophyll body paint that helps us be charged and unburned by the sun. In my work as a farmer, I learned that Detroit is a popular hub for urban agriculture. This work is led by Black women and Black genderqueer people. This piece tells the story of the spirit that keeps us.
