It's The Ultimate Yellow Brick is part three in my series on The Emerald City Sequence. The work is an ode to the 1978 American musical fantasy film “The Wiz”. Inspired by the song that plays when Dorothy and her crew make it to Emerald City, this series reflects the metallic and futuristic costumes and set design in the film. I watched “The Wiz” for the first time as a child on a VHS in the basement of my parents home in Detroit. It was my first introduction to Afrofuturism and Black whimsical film. My parents were born in the Motown era, and I remember them explaining the significance of Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson being cast. One thing a Detroiter is always going to do is remind everyone in the room that everyone is from or connected to our city.
