Earth Shatter: For Screaming Into the Void was inspired by the initial earth-shattering impact that proceeds deep grief. Two years ago, I began my journey to become a Death Doula because I saw a need for Detroiters to process grief. Our grief in Black Detroit comes from watching our city forget us, our people becoming displaced, and the general hatred that comes from people outside the lines. We also hold generational grief that traveled with us across the Atlantic, moved uptown during the Great Migration, and has rang loudly in the streets ever since. Our unique grief deserves to be held. This piece depicts glass shattering over a sunrise, representing the start of a cycle with an unheard scream echoing across the canvas.
