Cancer is part one in The Big Three Series, which is inspired by planetary movement. As my ancestors did, I use planetary alignment to coordinate care for my crops. When the full moon is in a water sign, like Cancer, conditions are good for planting crops with deep roots. Many people believe that astrology is fake, but this piece calls us back to the ancestral practice of looking to the planets for guidance. A practice that was stripped away from Black people as we were forced into White Western assimilation. This piece shows a woman with bound arms, and covered mouth and eyes. This represents Black People tangled and bound in a system that makes us disown ourselves. The key on her wrist represents the key to freedom and the ability to return to our ancestral practice that is within our control.
